Force-Free Gundog Training: The Fundamentals for Success by Jo Laurens

Back in 2019, I wrote this book covering the basics of force-free gundog training.

I might be biassed but I'd say it's full of super-amazing information about how to train your dog using force-free methods. Jam-packed with detailed diagrams and illustrations.

Finally, in 2025, the long-awaited sequel to The Fundamentals came out.

This book is intended to take people through to working their dog in the field, whether a HPR (versatile breed); spaniel; or retriever.

Reviews from Amazon

This is one book I wish I had found sooner! After months of going through different books and reading up on different methods of training (most I didn’t like), this really is a must have for anyone looking to get into training a working gundog or just the fundamentals of force free training with a common sense approach.

I have had dogs for 30 years and read this book recently when I got a new dog. A revelation! Fantastic. It has changed the way I trained my new friend. The approach is very powerful and simple to apply. Thanks a lot.

I am in the middle of reading this book and am really impressed with how methodical and thorough it is... every page is packed with information and very readable... this is proving to be a no nonsense approach without any fluff... although the little stick men and stick dog illustrations are worth the purchase alone!

What an absolutely amazing book! A must have for any gundog trainer. Firstly, as Jo covers very early on, force free is not synonymous with letting your dog run riot like a spoilt brat. This is not a preachy anti-traditional book. This is an excellent guide to training without needing to punish or intimidate the other half of your team... I simply cannot recommend this book enough.

This IS the dog training textbook I've been looking for. Both me and dog are having a great time along this journey of training both of us the fundamentals of this sport in a way I can go to bed at night knowing both of us are having a wonderful time. Can't wait for Jo's next book on more advanced gundog work!

This truly is one of the best force free gundog books around. What makes it so good is the thorough coverage of hunt training. The retrieve training is priceless and I attribute my dog's success to training with this method. I look forward to advancing my dog's skills as we make our way through the numerous exercises. Don't hesitate to get this book it is a winner and a keeper.
